Description: The Blue-throated Conure (Pyrrhura cruentata) is also known as Blue-chested or Blue-throated Parakeet, Blue-chested or Red-rumped Conures. These conures originate from Brazil. The Blue-throated Conure is a medium-sized conure with the main body dominated by a rich green color. This green parakeet has a dark brown crown, red ear-coverts, green cheeks and orange yellow on the sides of their necks. It has a blue upper chest, yellow green upper tail, red underside tail feathers, grey bill, blue outer wing feathers, and red shoulder and belly patch. Juveniles have duller colors than adult and have brown eye color.

Sexing: Males and females look alike making gender identification difficult without additional DNA. We offer DNA services for an additional fee.

Size: About 11.7 inches in length when adult and weighs about 3 ounces.

Lifespan: expected life span is 25 - 30 years

Behavior & Temperament: Best described as moderate in every regard, these little parrots are content with simple natural calls and just a few words of mimicking. The chirps, tweets and an occasional screech are all toned down and not too annoying. Calls made in flight are high-pitched, chattering notes.

Like other conures, these Blue Throated Conures really enjoy bathing. Conures can’t get enough of it. So offer them regular baths in the bathroom sink or a larger bathing dish. It simulates the humid conditions of their natural habitat and prevents any feather related diseases.

Not too noisy, these conures are playful with a silly personality and an affectionate side as well.

Breeding: This conure nests in a tree cavity. The female usually lays between two to four eggs and both parents incubate the eggs for about 25 days. The young fledge when they are about 10 weeks old.

Diet:  The natural diet consists mainly of quality seeds products for conures such as our nutritious conure seed. In the wild they also feed on flowers and berries.
