Captive Raised

Description: The vibrant and colorful Red Crested Cardinal for sale (Paroaria coronata) is a songbird with a prominent red head and crest. Some disagreement exists as to whether this species belongs in the family of the tanagers  (Thraupidae) or the bunting (Emberizidae, known in North America as sparrows). Notwithstanding its similar name, this bird is not closely related to the true cardinal family (Cardinalidae). It is called the Red Kramer, named after the character on seinfeld, due to its similar "hairdo". It is found in northern Argentina, Bolivia, southern Brazil, Paraguay and Unguay. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry shrubland and heavily degraded former forest. Among other regions, it is found in southern part of the Pantanal. It has also been introduced to Hawaii and Puerto Rico. In Brazil, it has been introduced to various places outside its historical range, as in the Tietê Ecological Park in Sao Paulo, alongside its very similar-looking close relative, the red-cowled cardinal (P. dominicana). It has a white belly and breast with a gray back, wings, and tail. Its most distinguishing feature is its red head and crest, from which it gets its name.

Geography: Northern Argentina, Bolivia, southern Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay

Song / Call: Click for Red Crested Cardinal Song

Size: 7.5" Long

Life Span: 10-15 years

Sexing: Monomorphic (visually difficult to sex without DNA testing for gender).

Temperament: Red-crested Cardinal is often seen foraging on the ground out in the open in pairs or small groups, and can be in larger flocks during the non-breeding season. You will need space, and plenty of it, to enjoy this species at its best.

Breeding: The breeding season for Red-crested Cardinal is from early October to mid-February and Open Cup Nests are preferred.

Diet: Parakeet Seed, apples, berries, mealworms

DNA Testing:

If there is no gender option listed for a bird on our website, that particular species is 'monomorphic', which means we’re unable to determine gender without purchasing DNA testing. DNA testing is an additional $149 per bird to guarantee preferred gender. DNA testing may add an additional 3-6 plus weeks to estimated delivery time to allow for gender results. See our FAQs for more info.
